Join Dr Chukwuemeka Nwuba and Dr Tahani Dahir and other experts for an in-depth, thought-provoking workshop that sheds light on a topic too often left in the shadows.
This workshop centers the too-often invisible realities of boys and men living with eating disorders, situating their experiences within the social worlds they inhabit—schools, gyms, workplaces, and families that reward control, discipline, and a particular body ideal.
We will interrogate the early signs of disordered eating and the ways male embodiment is policed, noting how desires for leanness and muscularity are framed as “strength” rather than illness. Drawing on both clinician and client perspectives, we will examine the structural and cultural barriers—stigma, gendered expectations, economic precarity—that keep men from seeking care, even as their suffering deepens.
Together, we will confront the political and financial forces, and the intersecting realities of race, gender, and sexuality, that shape whose struggles are recognised, whose are ignored, and how treatment is imagined. In doing so, we aim not only to understand male eating disorders, but to see them as part of broader systems that govern bodies and assign greater value to certain lives over others.
The full programme is currently being developed and will be available soon.
The workshop content will also be available to ticket holders for up to a month after it has ended. Visit our workshop and event FAQs for further details.
