ARFID: Turning Understanding into Action

Gain practical strategies to deliver effective, inclusive ARFID support across services, settings, and diverse lived experiences.

This workshop will be led by Rachel Bryant-Waugh, a leading expert in the field of ARFID and eating disorders.

The session will focus on the practical implementation of supporting people with ARFID, moving beyond theory to explore how evidence-based approaches can be applied in everyday practice. Rather than concentrating solely on what good support looks like, the workshop will examine how professionals can put this into action within the realities of their services and roles.

Participants will explore the challenges that can arise when care spans different settings, teams or specialisms, and discuss how services can work together more effectively to provide joined-up, person-centred support. It will also consider how services can ensure staff across different disciplines continue to have the knowledge and training they need to identify and respond to ARFID appropriately.

The session will emphasise the importance of seeing people as whole individuals rather than focusing only on their eating difficulties. Discussions will explore how different aspects of a person's identity, circumstances and experiences can shape their needs and access to care. This includes considering the experiences of neurodivergent people, individuals living in higher-weight bodies, and those facing financial or socioeconomic challenges.

Drawing on Rachel's extensive clinical and research experience, the workshop will encourage participants to take a more holistic approach and consider how services can provide support that is inclusive, accessible and responsive to the diverse realities of people living with ARFID

Why This Workshop Matters

ARFID is a complex and often misunderstood eating disorder that can present differently across individuals and settings, making timely identification and effective support challenging. This workshop explores how professionals can move from understanding ARFID in theory to delivering practical, person-centred care in real-world services. Attendees will gain insights into creating more inclusive, joined-up approaches that recognise the diverse experiences, needs and identities of people living with ARFID.

What You'll Learn

By the end of the workshop, you'll:

  • Feel more confident supporting people with ARFID in day-to-day practice.
  • Explore ways to improve collaboration across teams and services.
  • Gain a better understanding of inclusive, person-centred approaches to care.
  • Consider how factors such as neurodiversity and life experiences can shape a person's experience of ARFID.
  • Leave with practical ideas you can apply in your own role straight away.

Who should attend?

The event is relevant to those who work with and support people with eating disorders, including:

  • Healthcare professionals who may interact with people with eating disorders, including those in eating disorder or mental health services (including CAMHS), primary care, and perinatal services.
  • Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists
  • Social workers and safeguarding professionals
  • Education staff, including SENCOs, school and college wellbeing teams, and university support services

Please note that the programme is designed to appeal both to people working professionally in a field related to eating disorders and to those caring for a loved one with an eating disorder. Due to the programme content and the debates which will ensue, the event content may not be suitable for anyone living with an eating disorder and could be significantly triggering for some.

We're putting the finishing touches to the programme. Stay tuned for updates.
