An overview of autism and eating disorders

Dr Emy Nimbley will talk about research that has sought to establish the prevalence of eating disorders in Autistic people, and of autism or Autistic traits across different eating disorders. She will then go on to reflect on the concerns that have been raised surrounding the cognitive impact of starvation, how some have argued that this may lead to an over-estimate of autism in eating disorders and how several lines of evidence suggest this is not the case. Finally, Emy will share a recent review that looked at eating disorder treatment outcomes and experiences in Autistic people, and discuss the clinical implications of review findings.

Ellen Maloney will present a lived experience perspective on Autistic experiences of having an eating disorder.

The session will conclude with a discussion and audience questions.
